Agile IT Organization Design: For Digital Transformation and Continuous Delivery

Rework your IT to Scale Agile

In order to scale Agile, it is not enough to just replicate development practices and techniques across teams. We also need to review organization structure and management controls to see if they are in tune with what is needed for responsive IT. Unless we do so, overall IT performance is unlikely to improve. This highly recommended book provides a basis for reviewing and reshaping the IT organization to equip it better for the digital age.

Author Sriram Narayan, an IT management consultant and ThoughtWorks veteran, shows how structural, political, operational, and cultural facets of organization design influence overall IT agility—and how you can promote better collaboration across diverse functions, from sales and marketing to product development, and engineering to IT operations. Through real examples, he helps you evaluate and improve organization designs that enhance autonomy, mastery, and purpose: the key ingredients for a highly motivated workforce.

You’ll find “close range” coverage of team design, accountability, alignment, project finance, tooling, metrics, organizational norms, communication, and culture. For each, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of where your organization stands, and clear direction for making improvements.

Sriram's talk at DevopsDays Berlin, May 2013

DevOps addresses the last mile of continuous delivery. It advocates the tearing down of development and operations silos. It kind of assumes that silos don't exist elsewhere. This is often not true in enterprise IT where the number of silos correlates well with the number of vice presidents. In this talk delivered at DevOpsDays Berlin in 2013, Sriram makes the case of applying the DevOps solution to other parts of the organization.

Sriram's talk at Agile India, Bangalore, March 2015

Good engineering practices and fail-fast, iterative, low-ceremony processes help achieve team level agility. They are necessary but not sufficient to scale agility across the IT organization. In this talk, Sriram will address what else is needed and why. In particular:

  • Why plan-driven IT projects are a bad idea why we need value-driven projects instead
  • Why a matrix org is a bad idea for IT and why we need cross-functional teams instead
  • Why IT budgeting needs to change from being project-based to being team-capacity based
